Palthe's Rhine Crossing
24/25 Mar 1945

Below are a set of photos taken by B.R. van Wulfften Palthe, a Dutch interpreter with the Corps. Tolken, attached to 152 Brig. which depict scenes from his crossing of the Rhine in a "Buffalo" during Operation Plunder.

The first photo shows a group of men listening to news being received by the Radio Car (pictured). Its caption reads At the radiocar we heard on 24-3-45 (Bert'jes birth-date) "Our troops this morning crossed the Rhine".

The next seven photos (#2-#8) form part of a series of small negatives, arranged in sequence, with a handwritten caption spanning the set which reads : "And here we go in the Buffalo, led by the skipper, to Rees, with many other Ducks who, quite far apart, also are crossing, to the eastern shore."

Photo #9 and #10 have a caption that reads : "Big heavy pads are required in order to hold the load when climbing out.". The later photo shows an adjacent Buffalo emerging from the Rhine.

B.R. van Wulfften Palthe would continue to advance with 152 Brig. until he was wounded by shrapnel on 17/18 April in the push to Bremen. He was hospitalised and would not see his new born Son for several months.
